Sailor Moon officially licensed in the U.S.!

If you are just recovering from the AWESOME OVERLOAD hangover you're probably having right now, or if you are barely hearing the amazing news, a HUGE Moon sized bomb dropped on us yesterday afternoon:

If you have been a Sailor Moon fan for 3, 5, 10, or even 15 years,  then you are fully aware of the series of indescribably improbable situations and emotional roller coasters that was this anime has been in the U.S. Years and years we were hoping to hear news of the acqusition of rights at conventions or anime news sites, and eventually we kind of let all hope go after a few false alarms. We had just come to the conclusion that Toei and Naoko had hated to see what was done to the anime in the first run, so they had decided never to give the U.S. another chance. Plus, we have all been blinded by the news of Sailor Moon Crystal lately, the 90s version was starting to just be a dot in our rear-view mirror.

Yesterday afternoon, quite unexpectedly (most of us don't even follow convention announcements anymore because of all of the false alarms) news begun to pop-up on Twitter and FB that VIZ MEDIA had officially obtained license to Sailor Moon! In the age of technology, information flies at the speed of Moonlight, and we soon were all melting pools of Moonie feels making it trend on Twitter and causing all sorts of freak outs online! Hahaha!
Here is the basic info:

Sailor Moon Crystal
-They have also let us know they have also secured rights to Sailor Moon Crystal, but it is unclear if they will be streaming it online at the same time as NicoNico or if they will have it available afterwards.

We also have an new official Viz SailorMoon site and a  HULU page as well! ANN has an extensive interview with Charlene Ingram (Senior Manager of Animation Marketing for Viz) and Josh Lopez (producer on the Sailor Moon releases). It's very interesting and I highly recommend you read the entire thing here, but I'm just going to share an excerpt of a part of the interview in case you are wondering about the old Dic english version:

"Charlene: Well, it was a long and extensive casting process because you went about it a little bit differently, with that whole wide net.

Josh:
Yeah, we definitely reached out as far as we could to find the best fit for every character in the show, and it hasn't been difficult so much as fun, so far, because once you pair one actor to the next, you can just see the show unfolding in front of you. Once we had Moon, we had everybody else. It's been a treat, really.

So, awkward question: anybody reprising roles?

Charlene:
We can't say at this time, that's an AX reveal! I know that's the logical next question, but we want to save all surprises and a real rockstar rollout for that.

It's interesting that the whole cast of the original DIC dub will all be there!

Charlene:
One of the things about the previous dub is that there were so many cast changes throughout that there's no one Sailor Moon, there's almost no "one" of anybody. It's partially because it's a product of its time, but the expectation in anime now is to try and keep the most consistent cast possible throughout. In doing this new dub true to the Japanese version, all the Japanese names, situations, everything, we wanted a real cohesive cast that could go the full 200 episode journey, really grow with their characters and make it consistent across the board.

Speaking of that, based on this announcement, you don't have the DIC dub, you don't have the old syndicated television version of the show and it will not be made available at least through you, correct?

Charlene:
It's just not available.

So what you're saying is, "please don't ask us about it ever again"?

Josh:
(laugh) There's absolutely nothing wrong with a comparison to the old dub or to what DIC put out, especially because that's what some people can recall loving about the title and that's just fine. We're not trying to just do things different from them, what we're trying to do is make something that pays honor and respect to the original version of this, and that means we're offering everything to fans this time. It's not going to be censored, we're not going to hold back any episodes or seasons, you're getting everything.

Charlene:
That's the thing, the original dub cut and spliced episodes together, shortening them, changing genders, changing relationships, changing a lot of stuff. There were complete episodes never shown before. So this will be the first time all 200 will be fully intact."

So there you have guys! The Dic version is simply unavailable, there won't be a release with the old dub anytime soon. However we can rest assured that Viz is going to do their best to remain respectful to the original Japanese. THEY HAVE TO, if they screw this up, they will have hordes of angry Moonies at their door steps telling them to akyuryou taisan (Begone evil spirits!).  Here is the announcement vid! Stay until the end, there is a tiny preview of the new voice of Usagi!!

Also, here is a Livestream of the announcement at a convention, where they first let everyone know about the amazing news (skip to 1:04:00). Moonies seem pretty excited to receive these great news, and aren't we all freaking excited!? The lucky people who were at the convention got an amazing souvenir for the occasion. Pretty cool!

There will be another Viz Media panel at Anime Expo in L.A. next July 3rd were they will make a formal announcement of who the new voice cast is (they teased us that the actor for Tuxedo Mask will be somebody recognizable)! Also they plan to have the biggest reunion on Sailor Moon cosplayers ever. This event is going to be pretty amazing!
